The Filmjoint Premieres’ Second Edition Explores Social Issues Through Short Films

The Filmjoint Premieres, an annual event designed to give filmmakers the opportunity to showcase their unreleased short films to a live audience hosted its second edition at the EbonyLife Cinemas. The selected short films were critically judged by senior industry professionals, emphasizing the event’s commitment to celebrating and elevating short filmmaking.

This year’s event began with a panel session on this year’s theme, “Shaping the Cinematic Landscape of Short Films.” The panel featured Uche Okocha (Co-Founder of Trino Motion Pictures), Anita Abada (Founder of OneFlick Media/FilmMakeHer Initiative), and Obinna Okerekeocha (Director of Content at Moniepoint), with film director Chidinma Onyebuchi moderating.

Five films premiered during the event, showcasing an array of short filmmaking from Nigeria and the UK. These included award-winning Nigerian short films such as Maki, The Veil, and Better Place, the UK-based film Bunuelesque, and the 2023 AFRIFF Best Short Film winner, Man and Masquerade. Many of the films addressed themes of domestic violence and other pressing social issues, resonating deeply with the viewers and sparking meaningful conversations.

After the screenings, the red carpet buzzed with excitement as attendees expressed their admiration for the films and connected with filmmakers and fellow cinephiles. The event successfully created a space where short films were celebrated and appreciated, as envisioned by FilmJoint.

The Filmjoint is currently gearing up for The Filmjoint Awards, scheduled to be held in February 2025. All the nominated films at The Filmjoint Premieres have automatic qualification for the awards, giving them a chance to win in any of the award categories while also actively working to secure opportunities for these films to be distributed on video viewing platforms, increasing their visibility and generating potential revenue for the filmmakers.
