Guguru Studios Wins European Union Co-production Grant

Nigerian film production company Guguru Studios, and three other African production studios jointly won a €80,000 grant to produce a musical drama film about a troubling situation in Ghana.

Guguru Studios, also known for serving as producers for Sundance award winning film Mami Wata in 2023 and drama film, Tanwa Savage in 2021, recently launched their experimental murder-mystery audio drama on X (formerly) twitter spaces earlier in the year alongside Genti Media.

The four winning companies are Driving Park Limited from Ghana, AdomiBridge Studios from Ghana, Togo Films from Togo, and Guguru Studios from Nigeria.

These companies will jointly produce a musical drama film about illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey in Ghana. The yet-to-be-produced movie, A Dream To Die For, is written by David Masterwille and follows a group of young musicians caught up in the galamsey economy. Galamsey, derived from “gather them and sell”, is a local Ghanaian parlance that means illegal small-scale gold mining in Ghana.

Funding for the co-production was made possible with the financial contribution of the European Union and the support of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (ACP) in partnership with the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF) and Creation Africa Ghana, an initiative of the French embassy in Ghana.

New details about the project are expected to be announced soon.
